Free-Motion Quilting on the Amara

I “LOVE” to Quilt, and would be delighted to assist you in completing your Quilting project. Please see notes and pricing below.

Business Revisions for 2025

Please email me to make sure I’m available to help you finish your quilts. We’ve been blessed to be able to build a vacation house in Montana so that we can give support, when needed, to our youngest son and his wife who live there. We will be spending one month(possibly more) per quarter there. The best way to find out my availability is to email me at Pam.hayes@downsouthquilting.com

Custom Quilting: This does not mean making a quilt for someone. This is not what I do as a part of my business. Custom Quilting means I take a finished quilt top and sew the three layers together (quilting’s true definition) with my own art work. I’ve decided to remove reserving a slot for you - email me to get my cell number so that we can see if there is availability for me to custom your quilt. I do not do any custom quilting in the month of December.

Custom quilting costs more and mine starts at .10 cents a square inch and will be increased due to complexity of the quilt (for example: going around applique, micro quilting, and complex designs). You are welcome to send me a picture of your quilt when you receive my cell number via email and I can give you an approximate cost. Sometimes it takes me several weeks to complete a custom quilt and sometimes it takes only a week.

Edge to Edge quilting is always open when I’m in Georgia. I usually do not take any quilts in December but please contact me to see if it is possible for me to complete your quilt during that month.

I operate a 20 inch Handi Quilter Amara for custom quilting, an 18 inch Handi Quilter Avante’ and 24 inch Forte’ which are equipped with a computerized Pro-Stitcher for edge to edge quilting. Two machines are on a 12 foot frame (machine-quilting table) and the Forte’ is on a 14 foot frame accommodating king size quilts. I use Glide Thread on all my customer quilts and I provide this thread. I also carry batting but you are welcome to bring your own. See batting prices on quilting form.

Edge to Edge(E2E)/Computerized

Your design you pick determines your price per square inch. I have recently divided purchased designs into four notebooks. You can have your quilt quilted simply at 2 cents a square inch. I also have designs that are 2.5 cents a square inch, 3 cents a square inch and 3.5 cents a square inch. The more dense the design and the time it takes for my machine to complete a row have determined these prices. You can view my notebooks when you drop off your quilt. If you’d like, you can look at Urban Elementz, My Creative Stitches, and Wasatch Quilting to choose a design you think you might like for your edge to edge quilting before dropping off your quilt.

Custom Quilting:

Begins at $0.10 Cents a square inch and increases with complexity. Send me a picture of your quilt and I can approximate a cost.

Quilt Top and Backing Prep

  • Both should be clean and pressed.

  • All seams should be flat - open seams preferred but not necessary.

  • All threads should be clipped and removed. If using white fabric on top, please ensure that colored threads are not visible from the bottom.

  • All basting threads and pins should be removed

  • Backing and batting should be 8 inches longer than top on all sides. To get the 8 inches for backing, add 16 inches to the height AND the width of the top. All edges must be even. This ensures that the quilt rolls evenly on my longarm. The backing must be square. In the event it is not square and my services are needed to square the top, I will call and ask if you’d like to come get it and square it or there will be an additional charge.

  • Quilt top must be flat and square with no fullness in the blocks. If blocks are not square and the same size throughout quilt, it will have puckers. If puckers are found after quilt has been loaded and partially quilted, it is up to the longarmer to determine how to proceed with the quilt.

ALL DESIGNS WILL BE DISCUSSED AND AGREED UPON PRIOR TO QUILTING

If you need help with design ideas, I have many books with designs and will be happy to brainstorm with you.

Return Shipping Costs

  • at shipping company costs - typically UPS
